Visit by Central Mosque to NNLS Synagogue
December '06
In December 2006, the Foundation organised the first visit by an official delegation from the Regents Park Central Mosque, the most prominent Sunni mosque in London, to the New North London Synagogue to celebrate the Jewish festival of Hanukah. The purpose of the visit was to create a link between the two places of worship as part of their interfaith activities. This was the first time that such a high level visit took place between The Central Mosque and a synagogue to celebrate a Jewish religious festival.
The visit took palace on the 21st of December. More than 100 members of the mosque and the synagogue as well as a number of Jewish and Muslim interfaith activists and religious leaders were present.
There was a recitation of the Holy Qur'an, the lighting of the Hanukiah, speeches by the religious leaders of the two communities and a Torah Scroll was opened to mark the importance of the occasion and for the Muslim visitors to see.
The event was reported by the Muslim media in Britain and abroad.
